                TOWN PIEŠŤANY

The Slovak Health Spa Piešťany has belonged to the leading European spas for more than 100 years for its treatment of rheumatism, rehabilitation of the locomotor system and the nervous system. The curative sulphur mud together with thermal mineral water is absolutely unique.

Joint inflammation is reduced and mobility restored through specialised therapies. The immune system is reinforced, damaged cartilages become renewed, and the process of degenerative joint deterioration slows down. Specialised and experienced doctors customise a schedule of treatments for each guest individually.

Spa Island is an oasis of peace and relaxation, but also of recovery through active sport. Each of the internationally-recognized 2-5-star spa hotels offers its own rehabilitation centre. The Social Centre, 9-hole course and outdoor thermal swimming pool “Eva” with tennis courts and beach volleyball courts offer additional opportunities. The beautiful park is ideal for walks, and many cafés and restaurants offer local and international specialties.

The first chronicle of Piešťany dates back to 1113 and the status of the spa increased as time went on, boosted in the 19th century thanks to the high standard of spa care. In the second half of the 20th century, the number of the town’s inhabitants doubled to the current 30,000 due to its industrial growth.

At present, Piešťany is the most famous spa town in Slovakia and an international centre for the treatment of rheumatic disorders, as well as a crucial regional centre for culture, sports, and recreation. The second largest river in Slovakia – the Váh – flows through the town. The climate in Piešťany is typical for lowlands, warm and dry, and the area of the town has the highest number of sunny days per year in all of Slovakia. Piešťany lies 80 km from Bratislava, 150 km from Vienna, and the town is easily accessible by road and train. The local airport is able to accommodate smaller aircraft.

Throughout the year, the town hosts a variety of events, famous throughout Slovakia and around the world, such as the Opening of the Spa Season at the beginning of June, Jazz Days in July, Flower Parade at the end of summer, Truck Country Show, Country Lodenica music festival, Aviation Days, Cinematik Film Festival in September, and many others. Along with cultural events, Piešťany also offers numerous sports opportunities. In the town, you can find a golf course, tennis courts, squash centre, horseback riding school, water cable skiing, a small marina, and a number of cycling and hiking routes can be found in the area around the town.

              • Region description

                SLOVAKIA

Slovakia, officially the Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east and Hungary to the south. Slovakia's territory spans about 49,000 square kilometres (19,000 sq mi) and is mostly mountainous. The population is over 5 million and comprises mostly ethnic Slovaks. The capital and largest city is Bratislava. The official language is Slovak, a member of the Slavic language family.

The Slavs arrived in the territory of present-day Slovakia in the 5th and 6th centuries. In the 7th century, they played a significant role in the creation of Samo's Empire and in the 9th century established the Principality of Nitra. In the 10th century, the territory was integrated into the Kingdom of Hungary, which itself became part of the Habsburg Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Slovaks and Czechs established Czechoslovakia. A separate Slovak Republic (1939–1945) existed in World War II as a client state of Nazi Germany. In 1945, Czechoslovakia was reestablished under communist rule as a Soviet satellite. Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993 after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

The Slovak landscape is noted primarily for its mountainous nature, with the Carpathian Mountains extending across most of the northern half of the country. Amongst these mountain ranges are the high peaks of the Fatra-Tatra Area (including Tatra Mountains, Greater Fatra and Lesser Fatra), Slovak Ore Mountains, Slovak Central Mountains or Beskids. The largest lowland is the fertile Danubian Lowland in the southwest, followed by the Eastern Slovak Lowland in the southeast.

Curative waters abound in Slovakia: water heavy in therapeutic minerals, thermal springs and delicious mountain sources.
Each spa location features water specific to one or more health conditions, but each tends to draw the general public as well. Hotels in the area welcome those who wish to stay longer, and to take advantage of complete treatments, but day visitors also enjoy coming to bathe, to drink the waters and just to relax in the lovely surroundings.
